Break Out of a Bad Mood!

Costa Provis, LCPC, CPC

Are you in a bad mood or just feeling a bit blue? Either way, chances are you landed on this post because you are looking for something concrete to help stop a negative spiral and elevate you to a lighter, happier place.  So rather than just sit there feeling yucky, why not try one of more of the following five bad mood breakers a try?

Are you ready? Let’s jump right in!

1. Physical activity

One of the best ways you can adjust your mood upward is to change your atmosphere. Physical activity is a great way to accomplish this. You don’t have to go to the gym either to make this happen. Simple things, like taking a walk around your neighborhood going for a bike ride can sometimes be enough to rocket you away from the blues.

2. Sing a song

You might think this suggestion is a bit out there but in some studies, singing has been shown to be a meaningful mood lifter. You don’t have to be an expert vocalist either to experience the benefits of singing. Simply humming a tune can be helpful. It is probably best to focus on an upbeat song as opposed to something that’s going to bring you down. You might even try replacing some of the lyrics to one of your favorite songs with words that describe what you are feeling. Negative thinking becomes less powerful when we make the thoughts silly. Humor therapy can often do wonders when we are feeling blue.

3. Try dancing

Yet another idea that may seem kind of wacky but you want to get out of that bad mood, right? You don’t have to head out to a nightclub for this activity either. You can dance in the privacy of your own home. In fact, you can combine tip #2 above with dancing and double the power of your bad mood fighting activities. If you really want to get technical, dancing can be combined with tips 1 and 2 to offer a powerful trio because you are getting in physical activity! Let those endorphins flow and wash away the ugly. Did you know the celebrities like Channing Tatum use dancing as a way to infuse fun into “un-fun” moments? Yep, it’s true! Come on, you know dancing is fun!

4. Take a mindful bath

This one is good for helping you check out of your negative thoughts and check into a restorative and reparative place. Fill your tub up with hot water (not too hot) and simply slide in to relax. Allow yourself to feel the waves of warmth touching your skin. Spend time meditating on the positive to change your day from something crummy to something great!

5. Call an old friend

You know that friend you have been meaning to call for ages but haven’t gotten around to? Well, there is no time like the present! Re-connecting with people who have previously brought us happiness can be a powerful way to shake yourself out of a bad place. Plus, there is a good chance your friend wants to hear from you. Who know – your buddy may be feeling a bit down too. Why not help lift one another up? It’s better than stress eating.
