Tower of Arrogance

Narrative therapy allows the opportunity to construct stories that help to extend aspects of the self. Such stories can also create representations of life experiences. And that is what this post is all about – using the power of narrative therapy to tell the story of how narcissism, egoism and a sense of superiority can ultimately bring a person down.

Here at 2nd Story Counseling in Chicago, we use various aspects of Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Relational Therapy (RT) to help clients dig into their creative sides with the hope of healing traumas and mending emotional wounds.

An example of such healing can be found in the story below. Think of this as an example of the types of homework you might experience as part of working with one of our counselors.

In the realm of human behavior, few traits can be as divisive as arrogance. It is a quality that looms like a towering structure, casting its shadow over interactions and relationships.

In this metaphorical exploration, we delve into the allegorical tale of Skyler, a mortal who lived during the Hellenistic Age of ancient Greece and whose arrogance manifests as a perilous tower reaching great heights.

Join us on this journey as we witness the consequences of hubris and its impact on those who dare to climb too high.

1. The Foundation of Ego: Skyler’s tower begins with a foundation built upon his unwavering ego. Like a massive boulder, his self-importance anchors the structure, seemingly immovable and unyielding. It is this firm belief in his superiority that propels him to ascend even higher, oblivious to the fragility of his position.

2. The Stairs of Condescension: Ascending Skyler’s tower requires navigating the treacherous stairs of condescension. Each step represents a moment where he looks down upon others, dismissing their ideas and belittling their achievements. These stairs are a constant reminder of his perceived superiority, reinforcing his delusion and fueling his arrogance.

3. The Balcony of False Grandeur: Upon reaching the tower’s balcony, Skyler finds himself at the pinnacle of his arrogance. From this vantage point, he gazes upon the world with a false sense of grandeur. He believes he has surpassed all others, blind to the fact that his lofty position is built upon a foundation of insecurity and fragile self-esteem.

4. The Winds of Isolation: As Skyler revels in his towering arrogance, he fails to recognize the winds of isolation gathering around him. These chilling gusts carry whispers of discontent and resentment from those he has dismissed and disregarded. Slowly, the support that once held his tower in place begins to erode, leaving him exposed and vulnerable.

5. The Collapse of Illusion: Inevitably, Skyler’s tower of arrogance begins to crumble, unable to withstand the weight of its own conceit. The foundation cracks, the stairs crumble, and the balcony gives way. With each crumbling piece, Skyler’s false sense of superiority dissipates, revealing the hollowness at the core of his persona.

Wrap Up

Skyler’s tower of arrogance serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us of the perils of unchecked hubris. Arrogance may temporarily elevate one’s self-esteem, but it is ultimately a brittle facade that leaves its architects isolated and disconnected.

As we navigate our own journeys, let us remember to cultivate humility and empathy, for these qualities build bridges and foster genuine connections rather than erecting towers that crumble under their own weight.
